Analysis on development trend of Modern English

The society is developing, so are the different industries, which bring new revolution in development of English. English meets people’s need for communication, while also enduring continuous change; this is an inevitable rule. There are also different developing phases in the developing process of Modern English, especially since the 1960s, with the progress on technology, military, diplomacy and culture in English speaking countries, there are new evolution and development on the basis of the original vocabulary. Well then, what aspects are the developments mainly represented by? Now let us make some specific analysis.

Words of creation

To cater to the development on technology, military, diplomacy and culture in English speaking countries, there become many new words of creation, which turn the original common words into polysemic words. For example, “instant” has become a very stylish word in English and has been widely used in many industries, such as being used in products or business related to food in western markets.

Cut-up words

People in English speaking countries would cut up some words. For instance, cut up the head or end or middle of a word, so as to make it easier for wring, recording or printing, such as cutting “Monday” to “Mon.”.

Derivative words

These are the new words in Modern English, that is, to add prefix or suffix on basis of the original word, so as to create a new derivative word. For instance, “teach” to “teacher”, “hunt” to “hunter”. Add prefix such as “mini” to turn the word “bus” to “minibus”.

Compound words

This type of words extend the meaning of the original word, with the compounding of two or more words, such as “teach-in” meaning assembly and parade of teachers and students, “sleep-in” meaning a form of protest, “laugh-in” meaning pleasant meeting.

I am fully cognizant of the fact that the proposals set forth in this article have potential political implications. They are considered to be one of PRC's major nationalities, but it is very difficult to determine what language(s) they speak. It is for this reason that I wish to state most emphatically that my suggestions apply only to English usage. That may be he for the Hui who live in Sinkiang or Ninghsia, but what about those who are located in Yunnan, Canton, Fukien, Kiangsu, Shantung, Honan, Hopei, & so forth? If we call Swedish & German or Marathi & Bengali separate languages, then I believe that we have no choice but to refer to Mandarin & Cantonese as two different languages. At the very least, if diplomatic or other considerations prevent us from making such an overt statement, we should refer to the major fangyan as "forms" or "varieties" of Chinese instead of as "dialects". Is it a dialect of northwest Mandarin with an overlay of Arabic, Persian, Turkish, & perchance a smattering of Russian & other borrowings? If Chinese scholars wish to classify them as fangyan ("topolects"), that is their prerogative, & Western linguists should not interfere. So long as fangyan & "dialect" are decoupled, there is no reason that the proposed English usage should cause any disturbance among speakers of Chinese language(s). Unless the notion of dialect is somehow separated from politics, ethnicity, culture, & other non-linguistic factors, the classification of the languages & peoples of PRC can never be made fully compatible with work that is done for other parts of the world.
